THE BRIEF

To design a catalogue showcasing the artistic and architectural treasures found in the stations of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM). This booklet aims to engage metro passengers and individuals with a general interest in art, including students, artists, architects, and tourists.

THE PROCESS

After many sketches and moodboards, I eventually settled on using the STM network as a concept in itself. Montreal has spent the past few years cultivating a brand and wayfinding system to guide their transit users through the underground network. It seemed only fitting to use their typeface as well as themes from their wayfinding within the book, as the reader navigates through the pages themselves.

This process resulted in a catalogue with captions themed off of the signs found in the metro, on white backgrounds to indicate aboveground artworks, and black backgrounds to indicate underground artworks.

THE OUTCOME

This project certainly had a bit of a rocky start when it came to conceptualizing, but after I had settled on the wayfinding-based design, I found that things started to go much more smoothly with a solid grid system that allowed for flexible image placement and rhythmic flow of pages.
